An intake manifold mounts to the top or the side of the engine. This part is responsible for sending air to the engine for combustion. The intake manifold is connected to the engine with the help of an intake manifold gasket that is typically made of rubber and plastic. During its service life, an intake manifold gasket is continuously exposed to harsh external influences. Contraction, expansion, and extreme heat coming from the engine can cause failure. As a result, leaks may occur. Besides, air can be sucked through a leaky intake gasket and cause vacuum leaks and reduced engine performance.

When an intake manifold gasket is bad, a leaking coolant may contaminate engine oil. Therefore, when replacing an intake gasket, you may also need to change engine oil. Sometimes, plastic intake manifolds themselves need to be changed because of cracks in plastic. A malfunctioning intake manifold gasket may trigger some of the following symptoms: engine overheating or rough running, coolant leaks, and a red, green, or yellow fluid on the surface under your vehicle.
