The 2005 Geneva Motor Show unveiled the B-Zero project, a joint-venture of Toyota and PSA Peugeot Citroen, which was the framework of the Citroen C1 city car. Slightly different but similar Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo came out of the B-Zero as well. The Citroen C1 is a 3- or 5-door hatchback with the body designed by Donato Coco. It is equipped with a standard 1.0L 3-cylinder engine that provides 43.4 mpg fuel economy and an optional 1.4L HDI diesel with 48.8 mpg economy. The petrol engine can be specified with the 5-speed manual or Sensodrive automatic transmission, while the diesel one is so far available with a manual only. The model is notable with the large tail lights, extending from the rear door to the rear window without an external metal C-pillar.
2009 was the year of the C1 facelift. The Citroen C1 got revised underhood parts and featured new front bumper with a new grille style, traditionally used in the Citroen's family. The Vibe trim was changed to the 'VT,' and the Rhythm came as the 'VTR.' The seats unpholstery and ventilation controls were refined along with some of the exterior parts of the Citroen C1. There were also few other special-edition trims. A limited edition 'Splash' was designed with the unique color scheme, air conditioning system, revised interior accessories, and tweaked engine delivering 60 mpg fuel economy. An extreme C1 GT version was developed by a designer Franco Sbarro, who created the concept's style that followed designer's previous the Xsara Picasso Concept.
The German automotive magazine Der Spiegel states that the Citroen C1 has the second-best fuel economy among the production cars powered by a petrol engine, giving the pas to the Toyota Prius, and diesel engines, following the Smart ForTwo. German Automobile Club marked the Citroen C1 as the top sub-small car from the standpoint of low break-down rates.
Super compact and super stylish, the Citroen C1 has made its case as one of the most recognizable vehicles on the face of the Earth. Even in markets where this model isn't available people have taken notice. Who could blame them? Its sleek, futuristic body-styling, modern amenities, and unmatched efficiency are all attributes that the current climate embraces. With qualities that run this deep, it's easy to see why the Citroen C1 is one car drivers can't help but fall in love with.
