The Deville has remained one of the most prominent models on the Cadillac's roster. First appearing as the Coupe DeVille in 1949, the model started off as a smooth-looking hardtop with two doors and a V8 engine. From there, the concept grew, nudging Cadillac to make some improvements for the next generation. In 1955, the Cadillac Deville became available in both coupe and sedan bodushell, which opened up the vehicle's potential. The coupe offered more length and body-styles varied between a 2-door or 4-door hardtop.

Throughout the next twenty years, the Deville would gradually settle into its role as Cadillac's main luxury car. The early seventies saw a redesign to the front-end, exterior accessories, as well as addition of a 500 CID V8. An early version of the airbag was introduced in 1974. Known as the "Air Cushion Restraint System," an airbag was located inside the steering wheel with another placed in the dashboard to protect the passenger. This was also during the time when the Deville was available in what was called the "d'Elegance Package." The d'Elegance Package was geared towards upscale drivers and featured high-quality carpeting, exterior accents, and velour seating fabric, and power-enhancing parts. Come the eighties, the Cadillac Deville was built on the C-body platform. Competition between Cadillac and Lincoln ensued thanks to the success of the Town Car and Continental, respectively. But Cadillac answered back by stocking the Deville with a 5.0L V8, a feat Lincoln could not accomplish with a front-wheel drive vehicle at that time. More luxurious accessories and parts were added, especially in the latter part of the decade. Air bags, a CD player, and plush floor mats became extras the Deville offered.

Available in both sedan and convertible, the last generation of the Deville premiered in 2000. Powered by a 4.6L Northstar V8, the Deville is a 4-speed automatic built on the K-body platform. The Deville was also shaped with smoother lines for an aerodynamic appearance and featured LED taillights. Different versions of the model were produced. The Deville High Luxury included power rear window sunshade and heated rear seats, while the Deville Concourse (later the DTS) offered stability control, GPS, an active suspension, and some other parts.
