The Buick Regal, positioned by General Motors as a lower-priced luxury coupe, was first unveiled in 1973. Produced in five generations, it shared its powertrain parts and bodies with the Buick Century and was available in coupe and sedan versions. The first Regal generation was a highly-trimmed coupe equipped with a 5.7L V8 engine as a standard, and the optional 3.8L V6 and 7.5L V8 engines appeared later. Within the first years, there have been no major changes to the Buick Regal parts, and only in 1976 a significant facelift delivered square headlights. The North American production was discontinued in 2004, thought Buick announced a new Regal for the 2011 model year.
The number of body style and powertrain and safety modifications were made to the following generations of the Buick Regal. A 3-speed manual transmission was replaced by automatic, and a firm handling suspension, larger tires and sport wheels provided unexpected reputation for performance of the Turbo Regal version. After the substantial aerodynamic facelift in 1981 the Regal competed in the NASCAR racing circuit and won several seasons races. As the result of the multiple wins and victories, the Regal Grand National version appeared in 1982.
The last, fourth generation started in 1999 when the Buick Regal and Buick Century became virtually similar but with minor cosmetic changes to the accessories. Regal version was distinguished with more amenities, like heated leather seats, advanced sound system, dual climate control and other luxurious Buick Regal parts. Thought the North American production was ended in 2004, the manufacturing continued in China under the Opel Insignia name. GM launches Regal sales in 2010 in North America, positioning this model as an upscale sport sedan.
