Backing up a car or truck using only the vehicle’s mirrors requires driver skill and judgement because the rearward view seldom displays the entire length of the vehicle. Misjudge and you can end up with damage to your own vehicle and the one behind you. But even if you’re a parking pro, there can be huge blind spots with mirrors, especially on big trucks and SUVs, and if the presence of something or someone, like a small child, is obscured when you back up, the consequences can be far greater than scratched paint and dented bumpers. Thankfully, back up cameras can prevent all of this.
Accidental back overs result in an average of 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries a year, which is why regulations were enacted that require all new vehicles to be equipped with back up cameras by 2018. Some brands began equipping luxury models with back up cameras as early as 2002, and as the dashboard display screens necessary for rear image view became more common on less expensive vehicles, back up cameras became optional or standard equipment on more models. But if your vehicle doesn’t have one or you want to upgrade your system, you’ll find the equipment you need right here.
We have a huge selection of cameras and display options that can be purchased separately or in complete systems. Our range of cameras includes individual cameras with mounting brackets, license plate mount cameras, and even cameras integrated into tailgate handle bezels, emblems or center high mount stop lamps. These cameras are weatherproof and most have wide angle lenses to depict a large field of view. Some cameras feature night vision technology so you don’t have to depend on the illumination from your reverse lights, and defeat-able parking assist lines. There are wired cameras and easy to install cameras that wirelessly transmit the video image. We also offer model specific camera systems that seamlessly interface with your vehicle’s factory video display.
Our rear view displays come in rear view mirror versions that clip on or completely replace the mirror, and standalone monitors that can be mounted to the dash or any other convenient viewing location. If you prefer a factory-like appearance, we offer mirrors that look identical to OE and include the same buttons and functions like OnStar, and/or features like compass and temperature display. Many mirrors and monitors have multiple video inputs so the display can also be connected to a DVD player or other device, and most automatically switch to the rear view display when the transmission is placed in reverse. Other features available include split screen or quad image display, built-in Bluetooth, smartphone compatibility, auto-pairing, caller ID display, and external microphone.
While most back up cameras can be of help when hooking up a trailer, we also offer dedicated trailer hookup systems. Our portable wireless systems feature a hand-held monitor and wireless, magnetic base camera. They’re ideal if you tow with different vehicles and also perfect for different types of trailers and equipment – the camera can be positioned for hooking up 5th wheels or goosenecks, and even snowplows. Wired systems have a license plate mount camera and sensors, and a monitor that mounts to the dash or windshield. The monitor can be switched from parking to hitch mode and when in the latter color-coded center line guidance is displayed to help direct the trailer ball to the coupler. Sensors also provide audible assistance with beeps that increase in frequency as you get closer.
