Optimal cylinder scavenging, where the exhaust pulse helps draw the exhaust gas from the primary tube as well as draw the incoming intake charge into the cylinder, is most pronounced on long tube headers. Long tube headers are much more effective with longer cam durations and greater valve overlap, which is why they are recommended for “built” engines. The only caveats to long tube headers are that since the collector is lower on the header, ground clearance can be an issue, particularly on lowered vehicles, and fitment usually requires modifications to the exhaust system. However, the latter isn’t a problem with these headers if a BBK high-flow X-pipe is used to connect to the exhaust system.
