Not so long ago, the only tools we had available to us for piloting our vehicles were our eyeballs, judgment, and the view that the vehicle’s windows provided. But ask anyone who has ever backed over a tricycle, misjudged the distance to the curb and other cars when parallel parking, or gotten into a dispute with another driver over who was at fault in an accident, and they’ll tell you that’s not enough. If only they could have had another set of eyes or ability to record what they saw. Well, thanks to the marriage of cameras and video technology with the automobile, that’s all possible.
No More Blind Spots
Back up cameras first appeared on production vehicles in 2002, and their popularity has increased ever since and coincided with the proliferation of dashboard display screens on which the rear view is displayed. Today, some brands have taken this concept a step further with multiple cameras that provide a 360-degree view of the vehicle’s surroundings for even greater visibility. And having a dash cam can provide evidence that you are not at fault in a collision. But if your car isn’t equipped with such devices or you would like to upgrade, we have the Camera & Driver Safety equipment to do the job.
The More You See, the Safer You Are
Back up cameras make backing into a parking spot much easier, but more importantly, they help prevent accidents. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) says that accidental back overs result in 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries a year, which is why new vehicles must be equipped with back up cams by 2018. Thanks to these devices, hooking up a trailer becomes a simple job that can be accomplished without another person’s assistance. We have a large selection of rear view back up cameras, monitors, and complete systems. These components are affordable and relatively simple to install. Complete systems also include a monitor which mounts to the dash or replaces the rear view mirror, wiring, and some kits include a wireless transmitter.

Additional Features
Our rear view displays come in rear view mirror versions that clip on or completely replace the mirror, and standalone monitors which can be mounted to the dash or any other convenient viewing location. Some aftermarket mirrors look exactly like their OE counterparts and include the same buttons and functions like OnStar. Many mirrors and monitors have multiple video inputs so the display can also be connected to a DVD player or other device, and may automatically switch to the rear view display when the transmission is placed in reverse. The most sophisticated monitors from our selection have split screen or quad image display, built-in Bluetooth, smartphone compatibility, auto-pairing, caller ID display, and external microphone.
Mounting Options
The back up cameras presented on our digital shelves include individual devices with mounting brackets, license plate mount cams, and even those integrated into license plate frames, tailgate handle bezels, or center high mount stop lamps. These cameras are weatherproof and most have wide angle lenses to depict a large field of view. Some of them feature infrared night vision technology for better vision in darkness, selectable normal or reverse imaging, and defeat-able parking assist lines. There are wired cameras and those that can wirelessly transmit the video stream. The latter are generally more expensive, but easier to install. We also offer systems which are compatible with the factory display. These systems are vehicle specific for seamless installation.
