Unveiled in September of 1996, the Audi S8 has been noticed for combining both luxury and swift performance. It shares several traits with the A8, including the aluminum monocoque "Audi Space Frame," the Volkswagen D2 platform, and a couple of other parts. The model started off equipped with a 4.2L V8 engine capable of throwing out up to 360 horsepower and 317 pounds-per-foot of torque. At its release, it was mated to a six-speed manual transmission but a year later, Audi's tiptronic five-speed automatic became available. As for the standard Audi S8 accessories, alloy door mirror housings, chrome accents, and twin exhaust tips were the most noticeable details. A buzz got generated early due to the reception the model enjoyed. The S8 got attention right away and was awarded a "starring" role in the Robert DeNiro crime drama "Ronin" in 1998. Audi outfitted the S8 with several upgrades over the next few years for further luxury and safety, including a tire pressure monitoring system, parking assist, and navigation.
The second generation of the S8 saw a switch to the D3 platform and was still based on the A8. However, the engine got a sizeable boost with Volkswagen's 5.2L 40-valve V10 outfitted with FSI and shows off 450 horsepower along with 398 pounds-per-foot of torque. This time around, the powertrain is mated to a six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission. Like the first generation, the inside of the vehicle is a mix of comfort, luxurious accessories, and technology. Leather upholstery, Audi's Multi Media Interface, Bluetooth, and a 12-speaker Bose stereo system highlight some of the amenities. The outside of the current-generation S8 showcases a distinctive front-end grille, chrome trim, and V10 badges. Xenon HID headlights and LED reflectors take up the headlamp housings, distinguishing the model even more from its sibling, the A8.
Similar to the A8, the S8 also boasts a multi-link suspension. Safety is the name of the game elsewhere throughout the drivetrain, as Audi employed the Electronic Stability Program with Anti-Lock Braking System, Brake Assist, and Electronic Brake Distribution. The Audi S8 rolls on aluminum alloy wheels with performance tires and comes with a tire-pressure monitoring system. Since it has been around, the Audi S8 has enjoyed a substantial amount of recognition. It was nominated for Motor Trend's famed Car of the Year award (2002) named the Best Luxury Sedan (1999) by Automobile Magazine, and listed as one of the Top 5 Downsters by Car and Driver. More changes are expected in the future, including a 5.0L biturbo V10 engine.
Aggressive while maintaining a true essence of elegance, the S8 takes the A8 one step further. Whether traveling at top speed through the city or just cruising the countryside, the S8 is all about sophisticated performance and dependability. But it's the whole package that has gotten so much attention. The S8 is recognized as much for its alluring body shape, exquisite parts and profile, as it is for its lavish interior. Drivers who call one their own already know the story: inside and out, the S8 delivers.
