Nissan Pathfinder Reliability: Common Problems & Most Dependable Years

The Nissan Pathfinder has evolved over the years, but reliability varies by model. Find out which years offer the best long-term performance.
Nissan Pathfinder Reliability: Common Problems & Most Dependable Years

The Nissan Pathfinder is a three-row SUV with a powerful towing capacity and plenty of family-friendly features. It was redesigned in 2022 and now has sharper, squarer styling, slimmer lights, and big badging with a more muscular truck look.

The Pathfinder has earned mixed reviews online. Some owners are happy with its performance, while others would rather switch to another vehicle. But overall, is the Nissan Pathfinder actually a reliable vehicle?

Are Nissan Pathfinders Reliable?

The Nissan Pathfinder enjoys average reliability. Since its introduction in 1986, the Pathfinder continues to be an excellent ride, with plenty of room for 4 large adults and luggage for long trips. Satisfied owners report that their Pathfinders have been reliable with good fuel economy—without discounting regular maintenance.

The newer Pathfinder models, specifically 2019 onwards, have been performing exceptionally well. These models have had relatively fewer complaints online compared to the much older Pathfinders.

The 2005 model, for instance, has over 600 complaints on CarComplaints.Com.

Here are the reliability ratings for the latest Nissan Pathfinder model from popular review sites:

  • Car and Driver: 8/10
  • JD Power: 81/100
  • RepairPal: 3.5/5
  • Edmunds: 7.7/10

According to RepairPal, the Pathfinder’s annual repair cost is only around $542, meaning it has lower than average ownership costs. Repairs are less severe and less frequent than the average car, so the Pathfinder is generally a reliable vehicle.

What Are the Most Common Issues with the Nissan Pathfinder?

Despite its average reliability, the Nissan Pathfinder is not without its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues associated with the Pathfinder:

Coolant Leaks into Transmission Fluid

One of the most commonly reported problems of the Nissan Pathfinder involves issues with its engine cooling components, particularly the radiator. Coolant reportedly leaks into the transmission, causing coolant and transmission fluid to mix.

ECM Relay Failure in IPDM

In 2010, Nissan recalled certain 2005-2006 Pathfinders to replace the engine control module (ECM) relay inside the IPDM (Intelligent Power Distribution Module) assembly. Problems with the ECM relay can cause the vehicle to stall, not start, or run rough.

Other symptoms include sputtering, rough idling, and intermittent starting issues. The permanent solution is to replace the faulty ECM relay or the entire IPDM, if necessary.

Faulty Fuel Level Sensor

An erratic fuel gauge and/or a faulty fuel level sensor is another commonly reported Nissan Pathfinder issue. When this component fails, it may result in an active check engine light and inaccurate fuel gauge readings.

As a response to this issue, Nissan recalled certain 2006-2008 Nissan Pathfinder models to have the fuel level sending unit inside the fuel tank replaced with a new one with a modified float arm.

The molded fuel tank shells can deform, causing the fuel sender float arm to contact an embossment molded into the tank shell. This in turn causes the instrument panel fuel gauge to show that the vehicle has approximately one-quarter left in the tank when the fuel tank is actually empty.

Starter Relay Failure

Some owners report that their Pathfinder’s engine refuses to crank due to starter relay failure. These owners shared that while they could hear the starter click, the engine wouldn’t start no matter how often they cranked it.

Replacing the starter relay fixed this issue.

Navigation Issues

Some owners of Nissan Pathfinder have complained about some navigation system problems, such as inaccurate GPS directions, frozen screens, software bugs, and slow map loading. For some, this problem was resolved by updating their vehicle’s navigation software.

Unfortunately, as of this writing, there have been no reported recalls to address this problem.

Damaged Timing Chain Guides

While some owners reported that their Nissan Pathfinder’s timing chain guides wore out after significant mileage, others claimed theirs wore out immediately. For older Pathfinders, the upper timing chains cut through the plastic upper tensioner "feet".

Nissan released a technical service bulletin applicable to 2005-2010 Nissan Pathfinder vehicles with a VQ40 engine to address the whining noise from the timing chain area.

Air Conditioning and Heating Problems

Some owners report problems with their Pathfinder’s air conditioning and heating systems. For some, the blower works but air barely comes out of the vents and does not change to upper/windshield vents. They reportedly also do not have control over air temperature.

Other Pathfinder owners have tried to resolve the problem by replacing their broken A/C condenser fan, which reportedly cost up to $1,000.

Transmission Failure

Aside from coolant leaking into the transmission, some Pathfinder owners have also reported issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), including shuddering, slipping, and premature transmission failure.

Unfortunately, the only fix for a failed transmission is to have it replaced. Owners have reported costs upwards of $3,000.

A class action lawsuit was filed against Nissan to address this. However, the NHTSA concluded that further investigation wasn’t warranted and a recall wasn’t needed.

FAQ

How long do Nissan Pathfinders last?

A Nissan Pathfinder can last anywhere around 200,000 to 300,000 miles or more with regular maintenance. This is around 15-20 years of reliable service, given that maintenance and checkups are regularly conducted.

Where are Nissan Pathfinders made?

Since 2004, Nissan Pathfinders have been consistently manufactured in the Smyrna manufacturing plant in Tennessee. As for the engines, these have been reportedly assembled in the Nissan Decherd Powertrain Plant in Decherd, Tennessee. However, a specific model of the Pathfinder, the R51 Series, continues to be sold and produced outside North America.
