Not only a svelte luxury SUV, the Acura MDX is also known as the first of its kind to incorporate third-row seating. Launched in 2001, the Acura MDX replaced the SLX in the US and then took over for the Honda Horizon in Japan. The first generation of the Acura MDX showed off a 3.5L 24-valve VTEC V6 engine capable of 240 horsepower and 245 pounds-per-foot of torque mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. An innovative four-wheel drive system that can be activated at low speeds is included as well, but the vehicle runs using front-wheel drive during regular traveling where four-wheel drive is not beneficial. To cap off a successful first year, the MDX was named the North American Truck of the Year.
2003 bought on several changes: horsepower shot up (from 240 to 260), the chassis was reinforced, and the brakes were improved. A GPS navigation package complete with voice activation and a rearview camera became available as an option, as did a DVD entertainment system. For 2004 the engine got another boost, this time with 5 more horsepower. A slight redesign to the exterior and interior also occurred. It is the safety features where most of the updates came from, including side curtain airbags as well as a tire-pressure monitoring system. A year later, satellite radio and Bluetooth were added to the mix while the navigation system was updated. More awards followed during these years, as the MDX got the nod as Car and Driver's Best Luxury SUV (2005) along with being named Motor Trend magazine's Sport/Utility of the Year (2005). Sales of the Acura MDX were more than solid for the first generation, as the model averaged over 53,793 models sold per year (excluding its limited run in 2000).
The second generation of the Acura MDX premiered for the 2007 model year. Featuring a retuned suspension, it also boasts a 3.7L V6 good for 300 horsepower as well as 275 pounds-per-foot of torque. Gone is the previous editions' four-wheel drive, which is replaced by Acura's SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive). Standard on the MDX is leather interior, a power moonroof, and Xenon HID headlights. However, different packages are also offered, such as the Technology Package, Sport Package, and Entertainment Package. Once again acknowledge for its security, the MDX received the 2007 Top Safety Pick award. 2008 bought on a slight change, with the model receiving an automatic dimming rearview mirror while in 2009, a power tailgate became available on both the Technology and Sport trim levels. For 2010 the models received several noteworthy updates to some parts, including an improved 3.7L engine and six-speed SportShift automatic transmission. An Advance package which showcases Adaptive Cruise Control, an Active Damper Suspension, and 19" wheels became offered for the first time.
The 2014 Acura MDX offers not only better fuel economy, enhanced versatility and functionality, and quieter interior, but also higher levels of luxury, comfort, and prestige. It is constructed on an all-new, purpose-built platform engineered to meet the needs of today's luxury performance SUV buyers. The 2014 MDX got a new 3.5L i-VTEC V6 engine. This engine has less displacement than the previous one, but boasts improved low-end torque and fuel economy ratings. The 2014 MDX became lighter, having dropped about 275 pounds to ensure better power-to weight ratio, handling, and mileage. Less weight and new, more efficient and responsive engine directly contributed to quicker acceleration.
