The motoring community has long been buzzing with rumors as to what changes the facelifted second-generation Audi R8 might receive beneath the cosmetic tweaks. Now that the wraps are off, the 2019 R8 is in all its glory with new styling, more power, and improved dynamics. Up front, there is a wider grille with three slits at its top that evoke the original Sport Quattro. Unlike many other automakers, Audi applies “There is no replacement for displacement” philosophy to its supercar. The 2019 R8 retains its naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V10 that got a power bump this year. It is offered in two power levels. The “regular” R8 churns out 562 horsepower, which is 30 hp more than the outgoing model. The V10 Plus version, now renamed the V10 Performance Quattro, gained 9 hp and packs 611 hp in total. Regardless of the state of tune, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic manages the power, coupled with Quattro all-wheel-drive. The rear-wheel drive R8 is expected to come back later.

In the steering and suspension department, there are extensive changes that improve response and increase handling precision. Both of the available steering systems – the standard electromechanical power steering and the optional dynamic one – were recalibrated for better feedback. The Dynamic Select system now has three newly added driving modes that change the car's performance parameters to keep it stable and maneuverable in dry, wet, and snow conditions. A reduction in stopping distances is promised by retuned ESC parameters and the new-for-this-year carbon-ceramic brakes that are offered as an option. There is a new lightweight anti-sway bar in front for better stability on twisty roads. For those who need even more punch and exclusivity, Audi offers a Competition Package on its V10 Plus model limited to only 10 cars. Each of these unique sports cars is stuffed with all possible performance-oriented 2019 Audi R8 parts the automaker can offer, including dynamic steering, brake pads with titanium backing plates, and coilovers that adjust in three ways.
