Since the third generation of the Chevy Silverado arrived for 2014, the model lineup has been getting major updates and minor tweaks every year to stay fresh. There were changes to the powertrain and infotainment for 2015, new tail lights and grille design for 2016 along with the addition of Apple CarPlay, and revised standard and optional equipment for 2017. Although the 2018 Chevy Silverado is a carryover mechanical-wise, it got mild updates on other fronts. The exterior color palette was revised. Siren Red Tintcoat, Pepperdust Metallic, and Butte Red Metallic were deleted from the range of available colors, but instead, the truck can be had in new Havana Metallic and Cajun Red Tintcoat color options. The grille design depends on a trim level; for 2018, the luxury High Country trim got a bold black mesh design with chrome grille inserts. The Z71 version of the Silverado HD also brags with a refreshed grille and new decals.
The 2018 model year marks an important milestone for the automaker – 100 years of Chevrolet truck heritage. Far back in 1918, the legendary Chevy One Ton was unveiled, equipped with a 36-hp engine and capable of reaching a 25 mph top speed. To pay homage to its first production truck and celebrate a century on the truck market, Chevrolet developed the Centennial Edition Silverado and Colorado trucks. They are painted Centennial Blue like the original truck and feature exclusive badges inside and out and heritage bowties adorning front and rear ends. The special edition Silverado sits on chrome-trimmed 22'' wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires.
For 2018, all Silverado models offer a rearview camera as standard. The list of tasty standard features for the Silverado 1500 now includes an upgraded six-speaker audio system that superseded the previous four-speaker one. A small 4.2-inch AM/FM radio display gave way to a large 7-inch Chevrolet MyLink screen. Select models can be had with an 8-inch touchscreen. Rounding up technical changes is Tire Fill Alert that signals when the pressure inside a tire being inflated reaches a recommended level.
Chevy’s strong powertrains, which include V6 and V8 engines backed by 6- and 8-speed automatic transmissions come in unchanged, and no major updates are expected until the launch of the new generation. As for the Silverado 1500, there’s a standard 4.3-liter V6 that provides decent 285 horsepower, while higher trims got a 5.3-liter V8 that produces 355 ponies. Opting for the highest-grade High Country brings all the advantages of a robust 6.2-liter V8 that delivers 420 hp and provides towing power of up to 12,500 pounds. Those who expect greater capability can opt for the 2500 HD with 18,100 pounds of towing power and 3,534 pounds of max payload or the 3500 HD model that can tow 23,300 pounds and haul 7,513 pounds.
