In the 80's everyone could clearly see that the American automotive industry lags behing the Chinese one. That's why GM leaders desided to fulfill a highly expensive experiment called 'Progect Saturn', wherein the GM Company invested 3.5 billion dollars and a couple years of work. In this progect the GM company realized majour principles of production organization, starting from the continuous spare part supply and up to the collective participation of employees' representatives in management and planing.

The Saturn Astra was firstly presented in 2007 at the Chicago Auto Show. It was a compact 3- /5-door 5-seat hatchback equipped with a 1.8L 140ph petrol engine. The outer design of the Americanized Opel Astra duplicated its German analogue, the ony difference was usage of way more powerful bampers in the Saturn Astra models. The saloon of the car was equipped with a wide range of appliances. The standard version was provided with a StabiliTrak system. The engine of Saturn was both economic and powerful, fuel consumption economy made 33 mpg highway and 26 mpg city/highway combined .

In 2008 the Saturn Company presented the renewed version of the Astra. The modernized vehicle received enhanced design, new engines and an expanded package. The standard for Astra was a 1.8l DOHC 140hp engine, equipped with a 5-gear mechanic or 4-gear automatic transmission. StabiliTrac system was standard for the 3-door version variant, known to be the sports one, and for the 5-door version it was optional.
