Ford F-550 to Run On Propane Autogas

The so popular Ford F-550 will be available with new option, which the super duty truck's enthusiasts will fail to disregard. This year a Ford super duty truck test mule with the latest propane autogas-powered engine was introduced at the Work Truck Show, held in Indiapolis by the National Truck Equipment Association.

The developer confirmed its product will be offered in 2012 for the 2012 Ford F-550 and F-450 models. The power unit will be mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox and will operate on all configurations of cab and wheelbase.

This new offering was developed by ROUSH CleanTech, an engineering company, focused on propane-fueled vehicles. The 6.8-liter V10 power unit uses propane autogas fuel system, which burns cleaner than diesel or gasoline. It also features up to 40 percent decreasing in fuel costs, compared to gasoline. Currently the fuel system is under development. Prior to launch ROUSH CleanTech plans to get its newest product certified by California Air Resource Board and Environmental Protection Agency.

“Going green is not just for light-duty vehicles anymore,” said Joe Thompson, president of ROUSH CleanTech. “This truck has massive capacity, exceptional maneuverability, and rugged construction. It’s a workhorse in the field and economical on paper. Based on today's fuel prices, a propane autogas Ford F-450 or F-550 can save $30,000 over a 200,000 mile vehicle life, and can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by 120,000 pounds or more.”

2011 Ford F-550: Electrical System Problems

According to the report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on February 24, 2011, some of the 2011 Ford F-550 trucks have to be recalled because of the electrical system problems.

The NHTSA states that the recall affects 8,022 vehicles produced frome October 25, 2010, through November, 20, 2010. It is mentioned in the documentation that these vehicles have been inspected with an integrated diagnostic system (IDS), which had a custom software to read the serial number of the suspect BCM (body control module). Depending on the serial number, the BCM would be either not affected or replaced. The custom software wasn't reading the set of characters accurately, and as a result, it wasn't able to identify the BCM's that required replacement. The flawed body control module may have the potential for an internal short. An electrical short may lead to overheating condition, which can result in an unattended vehicle fire.

Owners of the potentially affected trucks should take their vehicles to a Ford dealership, where the body control module will be inspected, and if required, replaced free of charge. The safety recall will begin the next month.
