The Chevy Equinox holds the distinction of being the first crossover SUV produced by Chevy. Compact, with unibody construction, the first generation Equinox was built on the GM's Theta platform, sharing it with with the GMC Terrain, Pontiac Torrent, and Saturn Vue. It premiered for the 2005 model year equipped with a 3.4L V6 engine capable of approximately 185 horsepower along with 210 pounds-per-foot of torque. Power is directed through a five-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive. However, all-wheel drive was also offered as an option. Inside the Equinox, power windows, power locks, and a CD stereo were standard parts, while higher trim levels displayed heated leather seats, alloy wheels, a premium audio system, and other luxurious accessories. The model received praise right from the start, taking home the Auto Pacific Vehicle Satisfaction Award along with being named to the Edmunds.com Editor's Most Wanted List.
In 2008, Chevy unveiled the Equinox Sport, which featured a beefier 3.6L V6 engine good for 264 horsepower. It also showcased a six-speed automatic transmission and 18" wheels. Along with the Sport came the Equinox LTZ. The LTZ shows off a more luxurious image with such accessories as chrome wheels, door handles, and luggage rails. Inside, heated seats with leather inserts, a full stereo with CD/MP3 player, and side curtain airbags are standard. Also in 2008, the base Equinox was updated. OnStar GPS Turn-by-Turn navigation, Electronic Trailer Sway Control, StabiliTrak, ABS brakes, and a tire-pressure monitoring system, and new exterior colors were added to the package. It wasn't long, however, before Chevy released the second-generation Equinox, which premiered at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. It is still derived from the Theta platform but this time shows off a 2.4L inline four-cylinder engine that is good for about 182 horsepower. A more powerful 3.0L V6, improved with the power-enhancing parts, that is rated at approximately 264 horsepower is also available. And as with the inaugural Chevy Equinox, both an automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard with all-wheel drive being offered as an option.
The Chevy Equinox has enjoyed consistent success since its debut. It has received numerous awards from within the industry and has demonstrated solid sales figures. Beginning in the 2004 model year, the Chevy Equinox has averaged 95,270 models sold per year, ranking it towards the top of all domestic compact crossover SUVs. Boasting respectable performance, good cargo space, a quiet drive, top-quality underhood parts, and a smooth overall body shape, the Chevy Equinox is a strong competitor in the crossover segment and figures only to grow stronger.
The Chevy Equinox burst onto the scene and quickly gave every other crossover in its class a run for the money. That's because its comfortable performance in conjunction with a roomy yet practical interior layout separates it from the masses. There's enough pop and efficiency to get by on a rainy day if need be, but ultimately, it's the whole package why drivers have fallen in love with this sporty machine.

Based on GM's Theta platform, the current-generation Chevy Equinox is probably too bulky to meet tougher upcoming fuel economy regulations, so General Motors plans to downsize its best-selling SUV in its next generation.
The new Equinox will be built on the Delta platform, currently used in the 2012 Buick Verano and 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. Due to the much lighter platform, the new crossover can drop from 300 to 400 lbs compared to the current Equinox.
The current model is about 188 inches long and weights 4,000 pounds with AWD and about 4,200 pounds with the V6 engine. While the Equinox is usually reckoned among the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, it's actually a lot more heavier and larger on the outside than the aforesaid vehicles. In fact, the Equinox has more in common with the Kia Sorento and Toyota Highlander.
The more compact Chevrolet Equinox is due out around 2016. The vehicle, however, is unlikely to decrease in size too much as GM is reportedly working on a new lineup of sub-compact crossovers, including the rumored Buick Encore.
