The rack & pinion mechanism is part of the steering system of virtually any modern automobile. In this architecture, the main gear pair is formed by the pinion attached to the steering shaft and the rack connecting directly to the steering rods. Because the latter is, in fact, a toothed plank, it’s capable of transforming the rotary movement of the steering wheel into the linear shift needed to turn the wheels.
