A steering box is part of the steering system aimed at transforming the rotations of the steering wheel into linear motion. As an equivalent to the steering rack & pinion, the steering box does largely the same job but uses a bit different way. Unlike the rack & pinion mechanism, which remains pretty plain in its design while directly joining the steering shaft to the steering rods, the steering box is located remotely from the front axle and thus adds a number of extra links. Apart from that, the internals of the box are subjected to more intensive wear than the steering rack. As a result of all of that, the steering boxes are no longer in use among the light personal vehicles.
The steering box was superseded by the rack & pinion mechanism in the Chevy Corvette decades ago.
