The Explorer is one of the iconic nameplates that helped define the entire SUV segment in America, with over 7 million vehicles sold since its introduction in 1990. For the 2011 model year, it received a dramatic upgrade, having turned from a body-on-frame SUV to a car-based crossover. The Blue Oval gave its Explorer range a comprehensive mid-cycle refresh for 2016, so the tweaks for a 2018 year model are quite modest. Appearance-wise, the new 2018 Ford Explorer got a refreshed grille and fog lights along with a few new exterior color and wheel options. The Sport trim models also received quad exhaust tips. The biggest interior change is the addition of a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, which can provide connectivity for up to 10 devices at a distance of up to 50 feet away from the crossover. A few tech updates were added as well, including the Safe and Smart Package that is basically a suite of six active safety features. These are cross-traffic alert, blind-spot / forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and rain-sensing wipers.
Mechanical-wise, the 2018 Ford Explorer remained unchanged. The standard power unit is a 3.5-liter V6 that is rated at 290 hp. Two optional EcoBoost engine choices include a 2.3-liter four capable of 280 horsepower and a turbocharged 3.5-liter six making 365 hp. All three engine options are teamed with a 6-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is a standard layout, while power can be optionally distributed between all four wheels on models equipped with the base or 2.3-liter engine. The 2018 Explorer that has a 3.5-liter EcoBoost between its front fenders comes standard with all-wheel drive. Buyers can opt for five trim levels, which offer a host of standard and optional features for any taste, including a 12-speaker sound system by Sony, leather upholstery, cooled and heated seats, navigation, and more.
