Designated to take over for the Bronco II, the Ford Explorer ended up taking over the entire segment. The legendary SUV premiered in 1990 based on the Ranger with both a four-door and two-door body style. For the first generation, it was equipped with a 4.0L V6 engine capable of around 155 horsepower and came in two trim levels, the XLS and XLT. 1992 welcomed in the arrival of the Eddie Bauer edition, which featured a more upscale interior with the unique accessories and special badging but the Limited, which debuted for 1993, took it a step forward with such parts as automatic headlights, fog lamps, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a front-end grille painted to match the vehicle's body. Horsepower was elevated slightly for the Eddie Bauer and Limited models, but not by much. Also in 1993, antilock brakes became standard on all versions of the Explorer. Another variant, the Explorer Sport, was offered in both rear and four-wheel drive and was also marketed as the Mazda Navajo.

The second generation of the Ford Explorer rolled off the line for 1995. Trim levels were virtually the same, with the XL, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. The two-door Sport was also still available. Three engine configurations were offered. Standard was a 4.0L V6 similar to the first generation, which in 1997 was upgraded to an optional V6 with 210 horsepower or a 5.0L V8 capable of the same. Also in 1997, the Eddie Bauer and Limited models were equipped with all-wheel drive. In 2001, the Explorer Sport Trac was introduced, showing off a small truck bed matched to the four-door SUV body. In 2002, the Explorer parts were given a redesign, with Ford installing independent rear suspension and offering a 4.6L V8. A third row seat also was thrown into the mix, allowing for seven passengers. Several other updates to the Ford Explorer parts took place over the next few years, with another redesign of the accessories coming in 2006 that saw the addition of a heftier 24-valve V8.

More recently, the Explorer has been the beneficiary of added technology such as the Sync music interface and GPS navigation. The model has always been known as a strong seller, as it averaged over 345,000 units sold per year from 1999 to 2006 with the high being 445,157 in 2000. As for awards, the Ford Explorer has received its more than its fair share of industry praise. It has been a Consumer Guide Recommended Buy, Consumer Guide Best Buy, and an Automobile Magazine Reader's Choice All-Star (1998). The model was also named one of Motor Trend magazine's Top Ten Sport Utility Vehicles (1999) as well as an Edmunds.com Most Wanted SUV (2004) and MotorWeek's 2006 Drivers' Choice Award recipient.

The Next Generation Ford Explorer Receives Updates

Reengineered from the top to bottom and unveiled last summer, the Ford Explorer enters the 2012 model year with an all-new Ford EcoBoost four-cylinder power unit delivering great performance and class-leading fuel efficiency. The 2012 Ford Explorer comes in an expanded exterior color palette: Dark Blue Perl Metallic, Ginger Ale Metallic, Black, and Cinnamon Metallic.

The 2012 model will remain a seven-passenger wagon that is available with all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. The vehicle will be offered with Ford's 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder and a V6 engine. The modified model will be based on the Ford Taurus sedan's unibody platform for smoother ride and easier handling. The vehicle features a new three-bar grille with two thin chrome strips up front. The 2012 Ford Explorer will be available in entry-level Base, superb Limited, and volume-selling XLT trim levels.

No surprise! The 2011 Ford Explorer was named the Truck of the Year

This year the Detroit Auto Show audience congratulated the winners of the North American Car of the Year and Truck of the Year. The 2011 Chevy Volt was crowned the Best Car of the Year. The 2011 Ford Explorer became the winner of the Best Truck of the Year award. In line with the competition regulations not more than 50 broadcasters and writers from Canada and the U.S. are to choose the leaders in two categories mentioned above. The winners are to receive the highest possible score on performance, handling, driver's satisfaction, safety, innovation. In addition the participants should have reasonable foreseeable annual sales in North America. The 2011 Ford Explorer defeated the Jeep Grand Cherokee with 138 points and the Dodge Durango with 99 points.

The audience showed no surprise as well as no doubts about the winners. It is worth mentioning that there are certain rumors about the foreign and domestic automakers, taking part in the competition. The gossip is caused by the opinion that the domestic automakers are awarded more often than the Japanese and European ones. In any case the newly crowned Ford Explorer holds enough jokers in its pockets. It is the smartest Explorer with the intelligent on-board technologies including all-new MyFord Touch, advanced navigation system and Sync voice activated technology. The Mykey technology makes it possible for the parents to limit the speed of the vehicle when driven by the relative using the designated key. Will 2011 Explorer Become North American Truck of the Year?

Finalists announced for the 2011 North American Car and Truck of the Year, one of the most esteemed awards given in the region each year.

The Car of the Year finalists include Chevrolet Volt, Hyundai Sonata and Nissan Leaf. For the Truck of the Year, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer were selected to make up the final field.

Obviously, Chrysler has solid chances of bringing home the win in the truck category. In that case, it will be the third time a vehicle from Chrysler has been the best in this section.

However, up till now Ford has dominated the truck category. Moreover, last year Ford snatched both awards with the Fusion Hybrid bringing home the Car of the Year and the Transit Connect becoming the gold winner of the Truck contest.
