With larger diameter rims you can roll with low profile rubber, which can help your rig have better performance, plus you have more rim to show off that beautiful style and finish you’ve chosen. An easy way to do it is with plus sizing, where you mount tires with a lower aspect ratio on larger diameter rims, to maintain the same approximate tire diameter. This ensures you’ll have no problems with driveline gearing, the speedometer, and anti-lock brake and stability control systems. While all our truck and SUV wheels are heavy-duty enough for anything you do with your truck or SUV, their material makeup and method of construction varies. Steel wheels start with a high strength steel center that is stamped to form wheel stud holes, spokes, and offset, and then this is welded to high strength sheet steel that has been curved, welded together and then pressed into the barrel shape of the rim. Cast aluminum wheels are made by forcing molten aluminum at low pressure into a mold. Once the wheel cools, any necessary machining operations are performed. Forged wheels begin as a solid chunk of aluminum billet that is subjected to heat and intense pressure to form the wheel. These are also finished machined into their final shape. Flow forming is a process that creates a wheel that is almost as strong as a forging, at an affordable price. In this process a cast aluminum wheel is spun while rollers apply great pressure to the inside of the barrel, which changes the mechanical properties and grain structure of the cast rim, increasing strength and stiffness.
