The Volkswagen Up! is an ultra-compact car built specially for city dwelling. Unveiled in 2011, it was primarily targeted at the European market. This model succeeded the Fox in Europe; later, it was launched on other markets as well. Available only as a hatchback with either 3 or 5 doors, the vehicle is built on the 95.3-inch wheelbase and is 139.4 inches long and 64.6 inches wide. The wheels are pushed further to the corners, improving proportions and allowing for more room inside. Besides, the Volkswagen Up! offers notable cargo space for a car of this size – 9 cu. ft. behind the rear seats and 34 cu. ft. with the seats folded down. The Up! is quite an entertaining and comfortable car to drive, with the suspension offering a high level of grip and smoothening uneven surfaces and potholes.
There is a number of engines offered for the Volkswagen Up! city car. Originally, it came with only naturally aspirated 3-cylinder gasoline engines. The base 1.0 L version is capable of developing 60 hp, while the optional one with the same displacement produces 75 hp. Acceleration provided by these engines is quite modest, as usual for city cars, for instance, a more potent I3 allows the Up! to reach 60 mph in 12.4 seconds. In 2013, an electric variant of the Volkswagen Up! entered the market. It takes power from an 82-hp synchronous motor that ensures the same 0- 60 mph acceleration with the maximal speed of 81 mph. The model also utilizes an 18.7-kWh battery that allows for 99 miles of range. The same year, a CNG-powered version was unveiled, named the Eco-up. It also features a 1.0 L 3-cylinder power unit, though it is rated at 68 hp. In 2018, the most robust version of the model was launched, named the Up! GTI. It comes with a 1.0 L 113-hp turbo I3 under the hood that propels the car to 60 mph much faster – in 8.8 seconds and enables it to reach 122 mph. The GTI is the only version of the Up! to use a 6-speed manual, other models come with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic.
