The Toyota Supra is a sports sedan that first rolled off the line and onto the streets in 1979. Upon its debut, the model was dubbed the Celica Supra, as it was a descendent of the famous Toyota sedan. But the Celica Supra was different, showing off a robust inline six-cylinder engine which represented Toyota’s first foray into electronic fuel injection. 1981 ushered in a new 2.8L single-overhead-cam inline six-cylinder as well as an optional sport suspension. A year later, Toyota released the second generation of the Celica Supra, sporting a 2.8L dual-overhead-cam inline six capable of 145 horsepower. Two trim levels became offered for the first time. L-Type and Performance, with the main difference between the two being the Performance trim’s wider wheels and fender flares. In 1984, the engine got a boost up to 160 horsepower without any notable revisions being made anywhere else throughout the model.
The third generation of the Supra was introduced in 1986 with a new 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine that threw out up to 200 horsepower. Adjustments to the model came quick. Within a year, a 230-horsepower turbocharged version of the Toyota Supra was added to the lineup. The car was updated several times during the decade, with Supra parts, such as new tail lights, a new front bumper and grille, and new door panels. 1993 welcomed in the fourth generation of the Supra. The body of the vehicle was restyled, adding more smooth lines. Base Supras were equipped with a 3.0L 24-valve inline six-cylinder engine good for 220 horsepower and 215 pounds-per-foot of torque mated to a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. The Supra Turbo was powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0L that delivered 320 hp and 315 pounds-per-foot of torque. It also offered limited-slip differential, 17" wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, and a six-speed manual transmission.
Due to OBD-II standards, the Supra dropped a six-speed manual transmission for the 1996 model year, and the four-speed automatic was implemented as standard. The transmission was back for 1997, which also marked the 15th anniversary of the Supra. Both trim levels were given upgrades, including a rear spoiler and an improved stereo system. The Supra Turbo was decked out with a targa top and alloy wheels. However, the model was no longer for sale in Canada and by 1998, sales were discontinued in the US, as well. Finally, in 2002, Toyota halted production of the Toyota Supra altogether. Although the Supra is no longer being assembled, it is still a respected presence on the road. During its tenure it was recognized from around the industry for its friendly price-tag, impressive performance, and sporty style. In 1998, the model ranked in the Top Ten in Vehicle Dependability by JD Power & Associates. Also that year, Automobile Magazine named the Toyota Supra "the best roadster around."
However, a few concept cars were shown after its discontinuation, hinting at the resurrection of a revered nameplate. The Toyota Supra returned in 2019 for the next model year, unveiled at the auto show in Detroit. The fifth-generation Supra, code-named A90, has much to share with the BMW Z4, including the CLAR platform. Although, the two cars have entirely different personalities and driving dynamics. The 2020 Supra’s exterior is based on the FT-1 concept and features a multitude of aggressive visuals, including curved sheetmetal, aero pieces, and a double-bubble roof that traces back to the legendary 2000 GT. The long hood and short rear deck point toward a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The only engine available at launch is BMW’s 3.0-liter turbo six that develops 335 hp and 365 lb.-ft., pushing the car to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. Adaptive dampers and torque vectoring rear diff are standard across the board.
Unlike most entry-level sedans, the Toyota Supra doesn't just blend into the background. Not even close. This model comes to the show displaying a smooth body-design that offers a hint of luxurious style. The Toyota Supra also boasts enough pop in the performance to get by the competition, but it's the vehicle's efficienct parts that has garnered so much notice.
