One of the most influential cars of the last thirty years, the Toyota Camry made an impression right from the start. The Camry was created as an efficient compact meant to supplement the success of the Celica and Corolla. However, thanks to a string of rave reviews along with an impressive first year of sales, the Toyota Camry quickly became a force to be reckoned with in its own right. First available as both a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback, the Camry was equipped with front-wheel drive, several engine options, and either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. From the time the Toyota Camry was released, it set the industry standard for quality, durability, and reliability, and the same holds true today.
1986 saw the second generation of the Camry make its arrival, this time without the hatchback version. A year later, the first Camry to be produced outside of Japan rolled off the line in Altona, Victoria, Australia. It featured a 1.8L four-cylinder engine for the base trim level or a twin-cam 2.0L with a five-speed manual transmission for the higher trim levels. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky began assembling the Camry as well in 1988, showcasing the second generation model even more as one of Toyota's main U.S. entrants. This series of the Camry is admired for its popularity, as even today, some twenty years later, it is still visible on American roadways. The third generation of the model would not see the same enthusiasm, however. Toyota's redesign that yielded a wider body (introduced as the Scepter in Japan) did not seem to catch onto audiences. A two-door Camry coupe was offered as an answer to the Accord, but was discontinued in 1997.
It wouldn't be until the release of the Solara in 1999 when a two-door Camry variation would be available again. The Camry's base trim level in the U.S. became the CE, with the higher level LE and XLE trims also featured. The seventh-generation Toyota Camry was also presented as a hybrid that first went into production in 2006, making it the brand's third hybrid model to be offered following the Prius and the Highlander. Using Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, the Camry Hybrid boasts a 4-cylinder engine capable of 147 horsepower. Both the regular and hybrid versions of the Camry have reenergized the nameplate and sales of the model have remained consistently strong. Since 2004, Toyota has sold an average of 443,370 units, recognizing the Camry as an undisputable industry leader. Regardless of generation, the Toyota Camry parts have always been designed to suggest quality, precision, and performance.
The Toyota Camry commands respect. One of the most important vehicles over the last two decades, the Camry has withstood the test of time and keeps proving to be a leader in its class year after year. This dashing sedan is special regardless of year, generation, or trim level. Superior performance, responsive handling, solid Camry parts, and fuel efficiency are the reasons why this model is so popular. Without question, the Camry is truly an automotive superstar.
