The Tesla Model Y is the automaker’s second all-electric SUV, set to be a less expensive alternative to the Model X. Together with the Model 3 that is also aimed at the mass market, the new mid-size crossover is hugely important for the California-based company which already expects it to sell better than the X and 3 together. Elon Musk pulled the wraps off the long-awaited vehicle at Tesla’s design studio in Hawthorne on March 14th, 2019. It is intended to combine the practicality of an SUV and the performance of a sports car while looking snazzy for an EV. Nearly 75% of all Tesla Model Y parts and accessories are shared with the Model 3, with no exception for the chassis. The entry-level SUV also takes some features from its luxury X sibling, including the available third row of seats.
The exterior of the Model Y is in line with Tesla’s modern design language. The front fascia look is similar to its sedan-bodied sibling, while the dramatically sloping roof, beltline proportions, and raised rear hatch are clearly inspired by the Model X. The fancy Falcon rear doors of the latter did not find their way to the new vehicle; the use of conventional doors helped cut production costs down and retain a minimalist style. The simple design theme continues in the cabin, where a gargantuan 15-inch touchscreen unites all controls in one single unit, helping avoid the clutter of buttons and dials. However, for those who find the interior styling of this SUV too conservative, there is an abundance of Tesla Model Y accessories and parts offered on the aftermarket to spruce it up a bit. A panoramic glass roof creates an airy feel and allows for more headroom. The manufacturer claims 66 cubes of cargo capacity in total, with the 2nd-row seats folded and the available space in the front trunk combined. Like any other Tesla, the Y is a powerhouse of technology. It can be unlocked and started with the owner’s smartphone or key card and offers the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability as options.
At launch, the Model Y promises a 230-mile range, which can be extended to 300 miles with an optional long-range battery pack. It is currently the longest distance that an SUV can cover purely on electricity. 168 miles can be recharged in just 15 minutes at a Supercharger. Only rear-wheel drive vehicles are scheduled for the beginning of production; AWD models with an estimated 280-mile range are expected to arrive late in 2020. Tesla claims 0-60 mph comes in 5.5 seconds for the Long Range crossover, while the Performance version can do the same run in 3.5 seconds. Whatever version of this high-tech vehicle you own, here you’ll wind all Tesla Model Y accessories and parts for servicing, repair, or upgrade.
