It all began in the late 1960s when Suzuki acquired the Hope Motor Company and used its HopeStar ON360 vehicle as a basis for building the Jimny LJ10 (Light Jeep 10) with a two-stroke air-cooled two-cylinder. A range of LJ-badged vehicles followed, replaced by the SJ30 in 1981. The U.S. market got that model under the Suzuki Samurai name in 1985.
