The Formentor is the first model marketed under Seat's standalone performance brand, Cupra. For decades, the Cupra badge has been applied to Seat full-fledged track cars and road-going hot hatches, and the name itself is made up of the words 'Cup' and 'Racing'. The birth of the Cupra brand became the culmination of the Spanish automaker's tradition of producing high-performance and race cars under the Seat Sport motorsports division. The new company's debut offering is the Formentor coupe SUV launched for the 2021 model year and designed with an emphasis on style and performance. The new SUV uses VW Group's MQB platform shared with the Volkswagen Golf and Tiguan. Upon these tried-and-true underpinnings resides aggressive, sharply sculpted sheetmetal. The Formentor comes with a choice of two powertrains at launch. The plug-in hybrid model combines a 1.4-liter turbo 4-cylinder and an electric motor fed by a 13-kWh battery. This setup is good for 242 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque in total, and the battery can provide about 30 miles of electric driving. Performance-focused VZ versions are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 capable of producing 305 horses and 295 lb-ft. Both engines are teamed with a 7-speed DCT and all-wheel drive. More powertrain options will follow, including an entry-level 148-hp 1.5-liter I4 mated to a manual transmission and FWD as standard, a 2.0-liter diesel, a lower-output version of the PHEV model, and a mighty five-cylinder making 384 ponies. For its first year on the market, the Cupra Formentor comes in as many as six trim levels. The lower end of the lineup is represented by the V1 and V2; next up are the sporty VZ1, VZ2, and VZ3 models, and the limited-production VZ Edition sits on top of the range. The SUV comes with generous standard equipment, complete with LED headlights and tail lights, a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, 12-inch digital instrument cluster, ambient illumination, sport seats, and a D-shaped steering wheel, to name a few goodies.
