Every R1S employs a quad-motor all-wheel-drive system, with each wheel driven by its own electric motor. The torque that goes to each corner is adjusted automatically on the fly, which improves on-pavement handling and is especially useful off the road, where it's crucial to have torque at the wheel that needs it to deal with slippage. Adding to the off-road prowess of this adventure SUV is an adjustable air suspension that provides a max of 14.5 inches of ground clearance to overcome obstacles. The motors have a combined output of 800 hp and 900 lb-ft of torque and can send the SUV sprinting to 60 mph in only 3 seconds. The Rivian R1S comes with a 135-kWh battery and more than 300 miles of range at launch, with an option of a 180-kWh pack that offers about 400 miles and a more affordable 105-kWh 250-mile version following suit. When equipped with the right parts and accessories, the 2022 SUV can tow approximately 7,700 pounds, while its payload is rated at 1,800 pounds.

The interior of the R1S is upscale in a modern way. Leather surfaces and wood trim are still there, and the overall design is airy and minimalist, with most visual data and controls coming courtesy of touchscreens. In front of the driver, there is a 12.3-inch digital gauge panel, while a 16-inch touchscreen is in charge of controlling various infotainment and vehicle functions. Rivian's electric SUV is offered in five- and seven-seat versions. Second- and third-row seats fold down to provide ample space for fitting cargo, and there is additional front trunk room measuring 11 cubic feet.
