The valvetrain system is one of the major mechanisms that determine engine performance and ensure its smooth operation. Thus, the main requirements imposed on the valvetrain is high precision, reliability, and durability. The system can be driven by a belt, chain(s), or feature gear drive, yet each of these types has its pros and cons. As for the engines with chain drive, they are very widespread these days, but there are some concerns related to their servicing. In most cases, the chain drive is considered more dependable than belt one, however, it has a common disadvantage – unlike the belt, the chain tends to stretch, and sprocket teeth tend to wear out over time. The chain's rollers gradually get thinner, and the chain gets longer, which eventually affects valve timing and, therefore, engine performance. The racing environment implies large stresses and working at high RPM, so it's recommended to take these factors into account while adjusting or modifying the valvetrain mechanism. There are different solutions making the system more robust, durable, and efficient.
For instance, you could install performance gears made of tougher steel, use a double roller chain instead of a single roller, get aftermarket chain tensioners, etc. Meanwhile, you can also face the necessity to shift valvetrain timing, in order to increase torque within a certain RPM range. There is a purely mechanical and relatively simple way to do that – an adjustable gear allows for moving timing forward or backward by several degrees.
