While an overflow tank is pretty simple in design, it plays an important role in ensuring efficient operation of your radiator. To understand how an overflow tank can enhance the performance of your cooling system, it’s necessary to understand how this system works. When the fuel burns, it creates heat, which, if not diverted away, can cause engine failure. To prevent this from happening, the engine is equipped with a cooling system consisting of various pipes and tubes that run across the entire engine. The coolant fluid that circulates through these pipes and tubes keeps the engine from overheating. When the fluid gets hot, it goes to the radiator that transfers this heat to the air.
However, if the engine runs fairly hot, the coolant starts expanding inside the radiator, resulting in a pressure buildup. When this pressure exceeds the radiator cap rating, the cap allows some portion of the fluid to escape from the radiator to guard it against excessive pressure. This coolant moves to the overflow tank where it is stored until the engine gets cool. Without an overflow tank, the expanding coolant fluid would spill on the ground, which is very harmful to the environment. Along with preventing coolant loss, an overflow tank helps protect the cooling system from corrosion. When you turn off the engine, the fluid starts cooling down and contracting in volume. This decrease creates a vacuum that causes the spring-loaded valve in the radiator cap to open, allowing the fluid to return to the radiator. This helps keep the air out of your cooling system, preventing rust buildup.
If you want to stop coolant loss and keep the cooling system of your race car performing at its peak, then superior-grade racing overflow tanks and components stocked on our virtual shelves are for you. We cooperate only with the most reliable manufacturers in the industry such as Canton Racing, Mishimoto, Moroso, etc., to ensure you get products that provide uncompromising performance. Featuring a super sturdy, leak-proof construction, our overflow tanks are ideal for any race car, street rod or other vehicles. Unlike those plastic stock overflow tanks that degrade over time, most performance overflow tanks we offer are crafted using high-grade aluminum to combine light weight with exceptional durability. They are guaranteed to withstand the toughest conditions, serving you year in and year out. What’s more, the overflow tanks are available in a variety of colors and finishes to add a touch of style to your engine bay.
