As a matter of fact, around 70% of the energy released during combustion in your racing engine is transformed into heat that is partially dissipated and absorbed by the coolant. However, the huge part of the thermal energy is forced out of the engine with exhaust gases via the exhaust system. The temperature of these gases may reach hundreds of degrees Celsius, so your muffler and pipes can get extremely hot very quickly. Since the exhaust system is located very close to the underneath of your vehicle, its floor may also get very hot, causing lots of discomfort to you and your passengers. Fortunately, there is a simple and efficient way to prevent the floor from overheating, which is an exhaust heat shield.
Racing exhaust heat shields are specially designed for use on the track, trapping up and reflecting most of the exhaust heat. They are thicker than regular heat shields found on street cars as they need to withstand higher temperatures. In many cases heat shields are also used to protect the drivetrain, transmission, fuel, electrical, and suspension systems. Along with exhaust heat management, racing exhaust heat shields help to reduce transmission and road noise, making your driving more comfortable and enjoyable. They allow the driver to concentrate on the road rather than getting frustrated because of the road noise or hot floor.
There are several types of racing exhaust heat management solutions, including heat insulators and heat barriers. The first ones, also known as exhaust wraps, are usually made with fiberglass which is good for 1000 degrees F of continues direct heat. To increase their heat resistance exhaust wraps can be covered with a special coating like, for example, graphite or another heatproof material. As for heat barriers, they act as thermal shields which stop radiant heat. They are usually placed at least 1" away from the source of heat to ensure proper airflow through the gap. As a rule, heat shields are made from aluminum combined with a silica, fiberglass or ceramic insulation.
