One of America's original muscle cars, the Pontiac GTO first launched in 1964 and was produced until 1974 before being revived in 2004. When it premiered, the Pontiac GTO was an integral part of the initial group of US performance-oriented cars such as the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro. For its first generation, the GTO was equipped with a 6.4L V8 engine (325 horsepower) and offered as a two-door convertible, two-door coupe, and two-door hardtop. In 1966, Pontiac smoothed out the exterior even more and updated the front and rear fascia. 1968 ushered in the second generation of the GTO. In 1972 the GTO became relegated to trim status for the LeMans and LeMans sport. Horsepower dropped considerably, which began to become a constant. For 1974, the GTO started becoming more well-known as a trim level than as a stand-alone model. Gradually, sales of the trim waned with the car-buying public and by the end of the decade, the GTO trim was dropped from the lineup. However, thanks to various concept cars and a resurgence of interest inside GM, the GTO was brought back for the 2004 model year. Based off of Holden's Monaro V platform, the new GTO was compact, aggressively styled, and outfitted with a 5.7L V8 engine (350 horsepower).

2005 saw the 5.7L V8 get boosted up to a 6.0L V8 capable of producing up to 400 horsepower and 400 pounds-per-foot of torque. The engine was geared to either a six-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. The GTO was decked out with traction control, limited-slip differential, antilock disc brakes, 17" wheels, leather upholstery, remote-keyless entry, and an in-dash CD disc changer. The 2005 GTO came with a hood scoop, just like the original versions of the model. In 2006, Pontiac implemented such GTO parts as 18" wheels, clear taillights, and new interior lighting.
