Volvo's in-house performance division has long been engaged in developing race-ready cars for the Swedish automaker. But in June 2017, Polestar was spun off into a standalone brand, focused on making high-end hybrid and fully electric vehicles. The number one car to proudly wear the new brand's logo is named Polestar 1 – it is a high-performance plug-in hybrid coupe that is planned to be accompanied with an all-electric car and an SUV within the following few years. The hybrid powertrain of the new car consists of a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine that drives the front wheels and two electric motors powering the rear ones. The total output of the system is rated at 600 horsepower and over 730 lb. ft. of torque. What is more, Polestar's first car has an all-electric range of 93 miles, which is a class-leading figure. Electric motors are teamed with planetary gear sets that enable a smart racing-inspired torque vectoring technology for better cornering.

Polestar's hybrid got an advanced performance-enhancing suspension system. With a double wishbone front and integral link rear design that utilizes aluminum components and a composite leaf spring instead of conventional coil springs, the car provides well-balanced cornering and minimal body roll. It is also the first car to use CESi – a Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension by Öhlins that utilizes advanced damper technology to instantly adapt to road conditions. The brake design of the Polestar 1 is unique as well, employing Akebono-made six-piston calipers teamed with massive drilled and ventilated rotors.

Polestar has given its grand tourer coupe a carbon fiber skin to shred 500 pounds off its weight and lower its center of gravity. Its SPA platform is shared with the Volvo S90, yet the wheelbase and rear end are made shorter to create sportier proportions. The front fascia is distinctively inspired by Volvo's flagship sedan. The interior design looks plenty Volvo as well, with the same vertical touchscreen on the center console, bladelike air vents, and signature crystal gear shifter. Overall, the newly established high-performance car maker claims that 50% of Polestar 1 parts are unique.

Revamped to poach some customers from Tesla, Polestar follows a bold new direction, which is part of Volvo's intention to launch solely hybrid and electric vehicles starting in 2019. And with its class-leading technology and design that is expected to age well, the Polestar 1 is a great car to start with.
