Every rider knows that a combustion reaction involves two main components, such as oxygen and fuel. The formula is simple: 14.7 parts of oxygen per one part of fuel. This means that it’s impossible to increase engine performance by simply injected more fuel into the engine. The only way to add more fuel is to increase the amount of oxygen inside the combustion chamber. But, since it is limited in space and air contains only around 20% of oxygen, it seems to be impossible to force more air into the engine without installing a quiet expensive turbocharger or supercharger. However, there is a cheaper way which is a nitrous oxide system.
Installing a complete NOS system is one of the fastest and simplest ways to boost your engine’s performance without putting a strain on your budget. It contains nitrous oxide that is compressed to liquid form, and which when sprayed into the combustion chamber and heated to around 570 Fº (300 Cº) splits into oxygen and nitrogen, significantly increasing the amount of oxygen per unit volume. This allows for adding more fuel into the combustion chamber to make your engine produce more power. In addition, when nitrous oxide vaporizes, it provides a cooling effect on the intake system, dramatically reducing the temperature of the intake air, and therefore, increasing its density, so even more air can get into the combustion chamber.
There are two main types of NOS systems, including dry and wet ones with several ways of nitrous oxide delivery. A dry NOS system is the simplest way to add more oxygen into the combustion chamber. As a rule, nitrous oxide is sprayed into the intake manifold through a single nozzle. This type of complete NOS systems relies on the fuel delivery system to provide the extra fuel needed to maintain the right air-fuel ratio. When it comes to wet NOS systems, they spray both the gas and fuel at the same location just below the carburetor or just ahead of the throttle body if the vehicle comes with EFI. The most advanced type of wet NOS systems, known as direct-port ones, feature individual nozzles for each cylinder placed above it, which allows for the most accurate nitrous oxide and fuel delivery, and therefore, maximum power boost.
