The Nissan Tsuru is the long-running series of subcompact, compact, and mid-size cars. The model name is the Japanese word for crane, a symbol of longevity. The car was launched in 1984 in Mexico under the Datsun badge, however soon it received the Nissan emblem. In fact, it was the Sentra assembled in Nissan's facilities in Mexico and marketed in South and Central America, Middle East, Asia, and some other areas. The car was offered with two gasoline engine options (1.5 L E15 I4 or 1.6 L E16 I4) and a diesel one (1.7 L CD17 I4). The list of transmissions also included three options – a 4-speed / 5-speed manual and a 3-speed automatic. The second-generation Tsuru saw the world in 1985, named the Tsuru II. Based on the Nissan B platform, the model featured a wide range of body styles, including sedan, station wagon, and coupe. The range of motors was also wide, it consisted of four 1.6 L power units, along with 1.4 L, 1.7 L, and 1.8 L engines. 4-speed and 5-speed manual and 3-speed automatic transmissions were available.

The third-generation Nissan Tsuru debuted in 1992, internally known as the B13. Though this version of the Tsuru was designed specifically for the Mexican market, most of its parts were identical to the parts of the original Sentra. Exceptions were updated electronic systems, new gearbox by Renault, and some minor ergonomic and cosmetic upgrades. This version of the model was offered in a 4-door sedan or 2-door coupe configuration, being still based on the B platform. The Nissan Tsuru of the third generation was accepted very well. Thanks to its high fuel efficiency, reasonable price, and ease of maintenance, the model was often used as a taxi or family vehicle.

The Nissan Tsuru gradually grew in size – for the 2000 model year it moved from subcompact to compact class, and for the MY 2007 it became a mid-size car. The Tsuru is so popular in Mexico that it is still marketed in this country along with the originally-named Sentra.
