The Nissan Note occupies a well-established yet unglamorous segment of 5-door subcompact hatchbacks. It has been available to American buyers under the Versa Note name since 2014. Although, this practical runabout has been serving the needs of families on a budget since its introduction to the global market in 2004. Today the Nissan Note is known and loved for its space- and fuel-efficiency, versatility, and lots of tech for its price in Japan, Europe, Latin America, and other parts of the world.
The Note was built with the primary focus on ride quality and interior comfort with decent space for people and cargo. The Europe-spec model got two gasoline engines, 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter four-cylinders making 88 hp and 110 hp, respectively. The available common rail 1.5-liter straight-4 turbodiesel developed together with Renault puts out 86 hp and 147 lb-ft of torque. For 2008, the Note underwent a mid-cycle refresh. The entire front end received a facelift, with the hood, bumper, grille, and headlight assembly remodeled for a more modern appearance. Interior revisions touched the instrument panel. Most importantly, the diesel engine got a bump in power to 102 hp directed through a new 6-speed transmission.
The second-generation Nissan Note debuted at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The new model further improves the strength of the outgoing subcompact, providing even more tech and comfort for an affordable price. The amount of safety technology exceeds that of any other similarly sized car and is available under the Nissan Safety Shield package. This safety suite debuts in the Note and includes a whole range of features from blind spot to moving object detection. One more segment-first feature is the Around View Monitor that provides parking assistance based on multiple cameras projecting an all-around view on a 5.8'' screen. These technologies are available in the top-of-the-line Tekna model, along with half-leather seats, keyless entry, and other comfort- and convenience-oriented Nissan Note parts and systems. The base Visia trim offers stop-start systems and cruise control, while the mid-level Acenta adds rear electric windows, Bluetooth, and air conditioning.
The redesigned Note continues offering space efficiency and practicality through a well-designed cabin. Its passengers and cargo space is close to that of larger hatchbacks. Those sitting on the rear seats won't feel crammed in thanks to class-leading 25 inches of knee room. There is a host of storage compartments throughout the cabin plus a cube of underfloor storage. With the rear seats moved forward, the Note's interior can accommodate 14.5 cu.ft. of cargo. Power for the Note is provided by a trio of modern, fuel-efficient engines. There are two versions of a 1.2-liter gasoline engine making 79 and 97 horsepower and the tried and tested 1.5-liter diesel. The 2017 model year refresh brought the e-Power hybrid powertrain and a mild styling update. There are sportier Nismo and Nismo S versions equipped with a tuned variant of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder. Among Nissan Note accessories that add aggressive touches to these special models are a roof spoiler, unique grille, remodeled front and rear bumpers, and factory-installed sport seats.
