The Nissan Frontier is a pickup truck that first started being produced in 1997 for the 1998 model year. It took over for the previous Nissan Hardbody Truck in the lineup. It was offered in both a regular cab and King (extended cab). Initially, the Frontier was equipped with a standard four-cylinder engine that threw out up to 143 horsepower. But just a year later, a 3.3L V6 was introduced, which became available as an option. In 2000, a Crew Cab with regular doors was added to the lineup along with the Desert Runner trim level, which was built on a four-wheel drive chassis and featured such Nissan Frontier parts as ABS brakes, skid plates, fender flares, and an optional supercharged V6 good for 210 horsepower and 240 pounds-per-foot of torque. A redesign also hit the base Frontier, as the fenders were given bolt-on extensions and a new, more sculpted tailgate. Nissan extended the bed and later added an "Open Sky" top, which is a power-operated sunroof, exclusively for the Crew Cab.
In 2004, the Nissan Frontier was redesigned and the regular cab model was subsequently dropped from the roster. The model was also now bigger, showing off a wheelbase of 125.9 inches (whereas the first generation Frontier's wheelbase measured in at 116.1 inches for the King Cab). The newfound length took away the "compact" classification from the Nissan Frontier and instead moved it in with the highly competitive midsize pickup segment. It was also moved to the Nissan F-Alpha platform along with the Titan, Xterra, and Pathfinder. The 2005 Nissan Frontier was unveiled at the 2004 North American International Auto Show and began showing up at dealerships within months. It was outfitted with a base 4.0L V6 that produces up to 265 horsepower and 284 pounds-per-foot of torque, mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission with a five-speed automatic as an option.
Trim levels for the Nissan Frontier include the XE, SE, LE, and PRO-4X, which is designated as the off-road trim. For the King Cab XE, the base engine is a 2.5L four-cylinder that throws out up to 152 horsepower. Most other variations of the truck get the 4.0L V6. As for the Frontier's styling, a revised chrome grille, chrome bumpers, and angled inserts were added. A tube-style roof rack could also be had as an option. The Frontier became bigger than previous generations, and its interior has grown and can accommodate more cargo and passengers thanks to flip-up front seats. As for amenities, heated and power adjustable leather seats are available, as are power mirrors. Another feature of the Frontier is the Utili-Trak system. The Utili-Trak system showcases tie-down cleats for accessories such as bike racks, dividers, and modular storage.
Some models provide surprising performance and handling, while others care more about the space between wheel wells. The Nissan Frontier crosses all the bridges by being one of the most versatile and complete trucks on the road. More than enough space to fit what you need along with efficient performance it provides to get the job done is what the Frontier is all about. Constantly updated and always near the top of the list, the Frontier is only getting stronger.
