The Nissan Cube is a compact wagon/hatchback that was first introduced in 1998, sharing the same platform as the Nissan Micra. Upon its release, the Cube was only available in Japan. Its powertrain consisted of a 1.3L four-cylinder engine mated to either a four-speed transmission or a Continuous Variable Transmission. The model ran on a front-wheel drive layout but four-wheel drive was also offered as an option. In 2002, the second generation of the Nissan Cube was introduced. Once again, it was sold only in Japan. The Cube was still built off of the same Nissan B platform as the first series, however, the engine was changed to a 1.4L inline four cylinder configuration. One of its most compelling features was an "e4Wd" system, which could be obtained as an option, that sent power to the rear wheels when the front wheels would spin due to an electric motor located underneath the floor at the rear of the vehicle.
Transmission options were kept the same for the second-generation Nissan Cube, offering drivers a choice between the standard four-speed automatic and the available CVT. The CV transmission showcased a special "sport wheel button" on the dash as well as steering-wheel buttons. Other options for the model included a clean-air ion filter, remote entry, a sunroof, navigation, and different front-end grille styles. In 2005, an upgraded 1.5L engine could be had as an option. At the 2008 New York International Auto Show, Nissan premiered the Nissan Denki Cube concept vehicle, which ran on lithium-ion batteries that are said to provide twice as much energy as regular batteries.
The third generation of the Nissan Cube made its debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show before hitting US dealerships for the 2009 model year (it went on sale first in Japan in '08). North American versions of the Cube are equipped with a 1.8L four-cylinder engine capable of around 122 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual transmission or the automatic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Base versions of the Cube display a 60/40 sliding rear seat, air conditioning, head-curtain airbags, power accessories, and a CD audio system. Upgraded trim levels show off alloy wheels, automatic climate control, cruise control, iPod/MP3 capability, and a premium stereo system. There are other versions of the Nissan Cube that the automaker has made available, including the Krom model, which has polished alloy wheels, a two-tone interior, and other distinctive body features.
Aided by a boxy yet rounded shape and peppy performance on the highway, the Nissan Cube is one ride that has received some attention due to solid Nissan parts.
