The Mitsubishi Mirage rolled off the line in the late 1970s as a three-door front-wheel drive hatchback. It made an impression with drivers right away due to the emergence of the oil crisis that plagued the decade. Compact, svelte, and good on fuel, the Mirage proved to be a solid seller right off the bat. In 1979, Mitsubishi added a five-door hatchback to the lineup, which was exported to the US as the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Champ. 1983 welcomed in the arrival of the second-generation Mirage. The model was first distributed in other markets before being released in the US two years later. However, when it was finally visible on dealer lots, it was now badged under the Mitsubishi banner rather than just stamped as a Dodge or Plymouth, as it was previously.

The third generation of the Mitsubishi Mirage hit US showrooms for the 1989 model year. This time around, the Mirage was offered as a sedan as well as a two-door hatchback equipped with a 1.5L four-cylinder engine good for 81 horsepower (however, this number would be increased to 92 hp in 1991). The engine was mated to either a four-speed manual (later a five-speed) transmission or a four-speed automatic. Mitsubishi also unveiled the Mirage Sport hatchback. The Sport hatchback was outfitted with a turbocharged 1.6L engine which produced up to 135 horsepower directed through a five-speed manual transmission. It also featured four-wheel disc brakes and sport-tuned suspension. Two years later Mitsubishi released the GS sedan, which was equipped with a twincam 1.6L engine that delivered 123 horsepower. Fourth-generation versions of the Mirage arrived in 1993. Available in the S, ES, and LS trims, it was available as both a coupe and sedan. The base engine was the 1.5L configuration, but it was now mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. The LS showcased a slightly punchier 1.8L configuration. Motorized seatbelts and dual-front airbags entered the lineup in 1994. Also in ’94, the sedan was dropped from the lineup.

1997 welcomed in the fifth overall generation of the Mitsubishi Mirage. The base engine was once again a 1.5L four-cylinder capable of 92 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. Body-styles were a coupe and sedan offered in one of two trims: DE (later, the ES) and the LS. The LS sedan was equipped with a substantial amount of standard features which included 14” wheels, power windows, power locks, a sunroof, antilock brakes, and cruise control. LS coupes could be decorated even more fashionably with a rear spoiler, alloy wheels, and foglights. Mitsubishi didn’t make too many other changes to the Mirage parts during the Mirage’s remaining years. In 1999, the automaker decided to drop the car from the lineup to make room for the Lancer, which replaced the Mirage on the roster. Although no longer in production, the Mitsubishi Mirage established itself as a sporty, economical, and efficient vehicle that is still a favorite for a wide range of drivers.

The Mitsubishi Mirage has withstood the test of time. Backed by a highly-respected pedigree, the Mirage does not disappoint in any department. Each generation offers a reliable package of style, comfort, and performance due to solid Mitsubishi parts, which is perhaps why it has remained on the scene for so long. Always in style, the Mirage is still a presence on the street and a beloved resident of anyone's driveway. It is also a favorite model when it comes to customization with the use of exclusive accessories and parts.
