The Mitsubishi i-MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) is a five-door electric subcompact first introduced in 2006, at the 22nd International Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exposition in Yokohama. However, it wasn't until 2009 when the company launched the i-MiEV in Japan. The first units were available exclusively to fleet customers, and only a year later, in 2010, Mitsubishi made the electric car available for the wider public. The American-specs version bowed at the 2010 Auto Show, where Mitsubishi announced that in the USA the i-MiEV will be branded as the Mitsubishi i. The first cars arrived to the United States in December 2011. Initially, the subcompact will be available only in California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington, while the nationwide availability is expected by mid 2012.
The American-only version is somewhat larger than the Japanese one. It has the wheelbase of 100.4'', it is 144.9'', 62.4'' wide, and 63.6'' high. The Mitsubishi i electric car offers only 13.2 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, however with the rear seat folded, the cargo capacity reaches 50.4 cubic feet. The car is powered by an electric motor fed by a lithium-ion battery pack and mated to a single speed direct drive transmission. The peak storage of the battery is 16kWh, and it can run around 60 miles before recharging is required. The motor delivers 66 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. The drivers are free to choose one of three driving settings: Eco, B, and D. The Eco and B modes improve energy economy. The Eco mode does it by reduction of the power consumption, while the B mode increases regenerative braking. The D mode allows for full power and torque. EPA ranked the Mitsubishi i as the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the US. Its energy efficiency equivalent rating is 126 mpg in the city, 99 mpg highway, and 112 mpg combined. The list of safety Mitsubishi i-MiEV parts includes side curtain bags, front-seats side airbags, antilock brakes (rear drum, front disc), as well as stability and traction control. The Euro NCAP awarded the Mitsubishi i four star safety rating.
The i-MiEV subcompact is offered in two trim levels: the entry-level ES and the premium SE. The standard parts and accessories for the Mitsubishi i-MiEV ES are 15'' steel wheels, air-conditioning, full power accessories, 50/50-split rear seats, a four-speaker sound system with a CD player, auxiliary audio jack, and an on-board recharging system with a 120V portable charging cable. The additional amenities and parts that come with the SE version are automatic headlights, fog lights, special interior trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 8-speaker sound system. Both trims can be upgraded with the Cold Zone pack that offers heated outside mirrors and a battery warmer. The SE models can be also equipped with a Premium package that offers the following Mitsubishi parts and equipment: a hard-drive-based navigation system, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, Fuse hands-free link system, and a quick-charging port. The ES models can also be upgraded with a Level 3 quick-charging port.
Perfect for the green-focused drivers, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV lets city dwellers live large in narrow and busy streets. It can squeeze in the tightest places and can be parked virtually anywhere. When you sit behind the wheel of this urban miracle for the first time, it's hard to believe that the i can offer crisp acceleration, smooth ride, and responsive handling. The best thing about the i-MiEV, it does all that with zero emissions. The most affordable way to try test the electric car segment, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a reliable proof that good things come in small packages.
