After over a century in the car manufacturing business, Mercedes is finally ready to enter the unknown world of pickup trucks. And the German automaker couldn't afford to get its foray into the massive market wrong. The first-ever pickup truck by Mercedes broke cover at a global event in Cape Town, South Africa, in July 2017. Marketed as the “first of a new kind”, the Mercedes X-Class isn't in fact brand new: the long-awaited truck is based on the Nissan Navara, yet its styling is all-Mercedes. The first Benz with a bed has a premium look with a two-bar grille surmounted with the three-pointed star, signature LED headlights, slim tail lights, and 17- up to 19-inch steel wheels. It can be had in three trim levels that include the basic Pure with a focus on rugged work features, mid-level Progressive for those who seek more styling and comfort, and fully-loaded range-topping Power.

At launch, the Mercedes X-Class offered four gasoline and diesel engine choices depending on the market, which range from a small 164-hp four-cylinder all the way up to a 258-hp V6. Backing these power plants are three transmission options that include a six-speed manual and two versions of a seven-speed automatic. Featuring rear-wheel drive as standard, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is also offered with 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive. The newcomer to the pickup truck segment can tow up to 7,000 pounds, while having a payload rating of 2,297 pounds. With a ground clearance of almost 8 inches and approach angle of 30.1 degrees, Mercedes's mid-size pickup provides decent off-road capabilities and can cross up to 23 inches of water. It is also an excellent on-road performer, with its wide track and specially tuned suspension system with a double wishbone setup up front and coil springs attached to a five-link rear axle. Springs and dampers are precisely calibrated to provide a comfortable ride both in urban environments and off the road.

Typically for Mercedes, the philosophy of comfort continues in the interior, clearly seen everywhere from ergonomic seating to intuitive infotainment. Many of Mercedes X-Class accessories were taken from the C-Class and V-Class, providing the familiar quality feel and cozy homelike atmosphere that Mercedes customers got used to. The futuristic-looking instrument panel is a modern work of art. The concave design element stretches across its entire width, creating an airy feel. All controls are ergonomically placed, while the available wood and leather materials add a luxury feel. The Mercedes X-Class is a premium truck that matches many demands with its capability, performance, and styling.
