Mercedes’ first full-size SUV, the GL Class, made its debut in 2006 for the 2007 model year. And since then, the GL Class has been competing for the full-size SUV market share with such class leaders as the Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Cadillac Escalade. Ten years after the debut, the second-generation GL Class received a mid-generation facelift along with a new name according to the nomenclature shift. And that’s how the Mercedes GLS Class was born. The facelift included such exterior changes as redesigned headlights and tail lights, new front vents, reworked rear bumper, and a new dashboard as an interior upgrade. Under the skin, there is a new nine-speed automatic transmission which is now standard for all non-AMG GLS models. This three-row crossover SUV is capable of hauling seven people, and its cargo capacity is up to 94 cubic feet. The Mercedes GLS Class is placed on top of Mercedes' SUV lineup, right above the GLE Class.
The first Mercedes GLS Class was rolled out in four models: GLS450, GLS550, AMG GLS 63, and the diesel-powered GLS350d. The GLS450 and GLS350d models get power from biturbo V6 gasoline and diesel engines respectively. Both are equipped with a 9G-tronic transmission, all-wheel drive, and air suspension. Other standard features include folding side mirrors, daytime running lights, power liftgate, roof rails, heated front seats, power driver seat and power-adjustable steering wheel. The Mercedes GLS550 is a top non-AMG model that hits 60 mph in 5.1 seconds with its 4.7L V8 biturbo 449-horsepower gasoline engine. It also has adaptive suspension dampers and 21-inch aluminum alloy wheels. The AMG GLS 63 has a 577-horsepower 5.5L AMG V8 biturbo engine under the hood and features a sport-tuned suspension, upgraded exhaust, the Active Curve roll stabilization system, sport brakes as well as AMG styling elements. This AMG-badged vehicle makes a 0 to 60 run in less than 5 seconds.
The Mercedes GLS Class boasts elegant styling, rumbling performance, advanced driving comfort and safety - all in one! So no wonder that this luxury SUV has become one of Mercedes’ bestsellers.
