The Mercedes GLE Class, formerly known as the M Class, made its debut in 2015 at the North American International Auto Show. The GLE Class received its name as a part of a global Mercedes-Benz's renaming scheme, where “G” means Geländewagen, an off-road vehicle in German, “E” indicates that the GLE Class is an SUV equivalent to the E Class, and “L” links them together. Along with the new name, this crossover got a sleeker body with redesigned tail lights and cabin upgrades that include an improved COMAND system with a large display and a control dial under a touch pad. And although the M Class DNA can still be traced here, the Mercedes GLE Class definitely looks more upscale.

Initially, Mercedes brought to the U.S. market 3 standard and 2 AMG GLE models with a range of engine options. The basic GLE350 model gets a 3.5-liter 320-horsepower six-cylinder gas engine married to a seven-speed automatic. The GLE400’s turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 produces 329 horsepower. The GLE550e plug-in hybrid has a 114-hp electric motor and a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 under the hood, with an 18-mile driving range on electricity alone. Whereas the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive is optional for the GLE350, other models have it in a basic configuration. All models come standard with such safety features as anti-lock brakes, collision warning system, stability control system, rearview camera, Attention Assist, and emergency assist. It goes without saying that virtually any Mercedes’ technology can be added as an optional feature.

If standard GLEs aren’t quite a right fit for you in terms of performance, there is a range of AMG-enhanced GLE Class SUVs, namely the AMG GLE63 and the AMG GLE63 S that produce 550 and 577 horsepower respectively with their turbocharged 5.5-liter 8-cylinder engine and a tuned 7-speed automatic gearbox. The AMG GLE43 joined the Mercedes GLE Class lineup in 2016, boasting a 3.0-liter V6 biturbo engine that cranks out 362 horsepower and a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive. Mercedes also offers two GLE Class models in a coupe body style, both wearing AMG badges. The Mercedes-AMG GLE43 Coupe and AMG GLE63S Coupe share the wheelbase, powertrain, and interior with their standard SUV-bodies siblings.
