The Mercedes GLB-Class is a compact crossover SUV that slots between the GLA and GLC models in size. It is the automaker's first mini-ute to offer an optional third-row seat. Despite its compact dimensions, the new crossover by Mercedes-Benz can be a practical seven-seat family hauler and a reliable vehicle for those who venture into the great outdoors. The exterior design of the production version borrows heavily from the concept that previewed it, with boxy off-road-inspired styling, athletic proportions, and short overhangs. There are many Mercedes GLB accessories and parts that hint at the sport ute's adventure-ready character, from body cladding to LED headlights that can function in “off-road” mode to better illuminate obstacles. Underpinned by the same modular platform found under Benz's smallest vehicles, the new SUV is big on style.
The GLB offers a tech-rich interior with lots of practical features that should appeal to active families with kids. A total of four child seats can be installed in the second and third rows. Third-row passengers get conveniences like USB-C ports, cupholders, and storage compartments. When bulky items need to be transported, the seats fold down to create a flat cargo area. Interior parts and accessories are tastefully combined to create an impression of robustness, with leather seats and wood trim adding a touch of luxury to the cabin design. The dashboard is dominated by twin touchscreens for the instruments and the MBUX infotainment. The latter can also be operated by voice, hand gestures, or by tapping a small console-mounted touchpad. Automatic braking and forward collision warning are part of the GLB's standard equipment, while stepping up to optional extras brings parallel parking and blind spot assist, among other systems. Driver assistance technologies include adaptive cruise control that offers semi-autonomous driving capability. The system can be set up to automatically change lanes or speed down if it detects upcoming curves.
For its first 2020 model year, the Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 is offered with a sole powertrain consisting of a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 rated at 221 hp and an 8-speed dual clutch transmission. Front- or 4Matic all-wheel drive configurations are available. The AWD system has several modes which vary the front and rear torque split ratio, allowing for a 50/50 distribution off pavement. Performance on rugged terrain can be further improved with the Off-Road Engineering Package. It includes an information display which shows current terrain conditions and downhill driving assist, among other Mercedes GLB parts and systems designed to help you out when you're away from asphalt.
