Originally launched under the SEC (Sonderklasse-Einspritzmotor-Coupé) nameplate in 1980, this model was renamed the CL Class in 1992. Both, the SEC and CL Class are 2-door coupe vehicles derived from the full-size S Class and marketed in the personal luxury car segment. The CL Class was available in three generations until 2013 (2014 model year), when the range was renamed the S Class Coupe. Though the model competed with the Bentley Continental GT, Aston Martin DBS and other severe competitors from globally renowned brands, it was in strong demand during the production run.
