The newcomer will first arrive in a pure battery-powered form and will later be available as a plug-in hybrid. Equipped with a single 144-hp electric motor, the all-electric MX-30 comes solely as an FWD vehicle at launch. It has a 35.5-kWh lithium-ion battery that provides nearly 100 miles of range. According to the automaker, the advantages of using such a small battery are reducing the vehicle's overall weight and quick recharging. On a DC fast-charging station, the battery can be replenished to 80 percent in a bit more than half an hour. Following the all-electric MX-30 is the version with a Wankel rotary engine. As opposed to most other plug-in hybrids, this one won't use gasoline propulsion to feed the wheels directly. Instead, the gas engine will serve as a range extender charging the battery via an electric generator.

The MX-30 is about the same size as the CX-30, so it fits nicely into the urban lifestyle. Externally, it is unmistakably a Mazda crossover, with its subtle, elegant lines and balanced proportions. Its sloping coupe-like roof can be painted a contrasting color, while plastic side cladding adds a rugged touch to the exterior. A minimalist approach continues in interior design. There are, however, some interesting details such as a floating center console and cork trim. The seats are upholstered in material obtained from recycled bottles.
