The Mazda MPV is a minivan that first set sail at the tail-end of the 1980s and went on to become one of the Japanese automaker's most consistent vehicles on the roster. The late ‘80s/early ‘90s brought about the popularity of the minivan and car companies kept trying to get a leg-up on one another. Mazda distinguished the MPV from its competitors thanks to the model's "smallish" size (although still capable of seating up to seven passengers) and its available all-wheel drive. Under the hood was a 2.6L four-cylinder engine good for approximately 120 horsepower paired to either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. However, a bolder 3.0L V6 (150 hp) could be had, as well. In 1992, seating increased to eight passengers and the manual transmission was dropped from the lineup. By 1995, the V6 engine configuration took over as standard. During its first generation, the Mazda MPV also became one of the very first minivans on the road to feature four doors.
When the second generation of the Mazda MPV was released for the 1999 model year, it sported a shortened wheelbase and was constructed off of a front-wheel drive platform (LW). The most notable change to the MPV was the vehicle's lack of four-wheel drive, which Mazda discontinued. But a bevy of updates to the MPV were ordered for the redesign in order to make up for it. It showed off dual sliding-doors, a foldable third-row seat, multi-directional second-row captain's chairs, and power windows. The new powertrain consisted of a 2.5L V6 which got credit for producing up to 170 horsepower along with 165 pounds-per-foot of torque directed through a four-speed automatic transmission.
2002 welcomed in another update, as the engine was bolstered to a 3.0L V6 configuration capable of 200 horsepower mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. 17" alloy wheels, traction control, an improved braking system, and a new suspension were also among the changes. However, the DX trim was dropped from the lineup, as the LX and ES were left as the two remaining trim levels. A year later, the base trim became the LX-SV and showcased a wide list of options such as a rear-entertainment center with DVD. In 2004, the front-end of the MPV was given a fresher and four-wheel disc brakes as well as a rear air conditioner were added to the model as standard. Following the 2006 model year, the Mazda MPV was pulled from the North American market. Despite no longer being in production for US car buyers, the Mazda MPV is still a visible presence on the road, especially due to its reputation for comfort and reliable Mazda parts.
There is a long list of minivans that have come and gone over the years without having made even the slightest impact. We know who they are. The Mazda MPV is not one of them. Still a factor on the street, the MPV is credited with being named the most fashionable ride in its class by most major auto magazines and that is not a coincidence. Just look at it! It has more flair and personality than any other model in its segment, plus it is more roomy and comfortable than most. Always capable of putting on a show, the Mazda MPV is one minivan that defines its own category. What defines the MPV even more is the addition of stylish accessories and parts to Mazda MPV.
