At launch, the CX-90 offers a choice of two powertrains. A 3.3-liter turbo 6-cylinder comes in two power levels: a standard version producing 280 hp and a more powerful 340-hp variant reserved for S-badged models. This mill is assisted by a 48-volt system to help with acceleration and fuel efficiency. Another option is a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 2.5-liter four, an electric motor, and a 17.8-kWh battery. The system’s output is a healthy 323 hp and 369 lb-ft. Both engines are mated to a new 8-speed automatic gearbox that features a multi-plate clutch in lieu of a traditional torque converter, similar to an arrangement found in AMG transmissions. All CX-90s come equipped with rear-biased AWD.

The Mazda CX-90 boasts a handsome exterior that reflects the automaker's upmarket intentions, and a premium-grade interior to match. This is particularly true for higher trim levels, which feature soft Nappa leather upholstery, light wood accents, and a fabric-wrapped dashboard.
