The Mazda Cosmo, introduced as a prototype at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, went into production in 1967. It is a grand touring coupe that represents a milestone in the automotive history as the first production car ever equipped with a twin-rotor Wankel engine. With the introduction of the second generation, the Cosmo was sold internationally, landing on the U.S. market in 1976. Even though the Mazda Cosmo had amazing success in Japan, it could hardly gain a slice of the American market. Export ceased in 1978, and the model was replaced by the Mazda RX-7, but the story of Cosmo continued in Japan and other countries until 1995.
