The automaker released two sport versions: the Ghibli Kit Sportivo and Ghibli Cup in 1995. Next year, the car was upgraded and got the name of the Ghibli GT. The changes included transmission and suspension modifications, black headlight housings, and seven-spoked 17-inch alloy wheels. The Ghibli Open Cup was a single-make racing series that was in production during two years – 1995 and 1996. In 1998, the car went out of production.

The third generation Maserati Ghibli (also known as the Tipo M157) was released at the Shanghai motor show in 2013.
