Shortly after Lexus announced itself as a presence on the luxury car market came the SC, the brand's first coupe. Chosen to go head-to-head with traditional entrants from Mercedes and BMW, the Lexus SC rolled off the line and into showrooms in time for the 1992 model year. At its launch, the SC was outfitted with a 3.0 inline six-cylinder engine (SC 300) mated to either a manual or automatic transmission. A higher-powered version, the SC 400, showed off a more robust 4.0L V8 (which mirrored the same engine as the LS 400) which got credit for churning out around 250 horsepower. Also that year, the SC 400 was given a five-speed automatic transmission for the first time. The first generation of the model was assembled until 2002, when it gave way to the Lexus SC 430. Now armed with a 4.3L V8 engine good for 288 horsepower and capable of hitting 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The engine was mated to a five-speed automatic transmission until 2005, after which a six-speed took over. Another one of the model's features was its convertible power-folding top which could be operated with the push of a button. It also featured such niceties like adaptive xenon HID headlights, automatic climate control, navigation, and heated seats.

In 2006, the Lexus SC 430 was given a new standard six-speed automatic transmission along with several exterior styling cues such as a new front-fascia, new tail lights, and new wheels. On the inside of the model, the instrument cluster was revised and accents were installed. Safety details were constantly improved and by 2007, driver and passenger knee-airbags became standard while the front-passenger seat received a sensor that indicated when the seat was occupied in case of airbag deployment. Throughout the next several years, Toyota did not employ too many changes to the SC parts. However, by 2010, the Lexus SC 430 was redesigned with numerous changes in the technology department, including an upgraded navigation/audio system which displayed real-time traffic and weather.
